The origin of darts was never
firmly established, but it is likely to date back to the medieval times in
England. It is believed that darts started out as a form of training in archery.
Arrows were shortened and hurled at the upturned covers of empty wine barrels.
As darts grew in popularity, the cross-section of a tree became a better and
more convenient target. The rings of the tree provided radial divisions, much
like our present version of a darts board.
